This is Kase Sensei's (10th Dan) personal (= non-standard) interpretation of this kata!

@NakedHenry I was a student of Taiji Kase for twenty years. Your right in that he was not awarded 10th Dan but he died in 2004. He was awarded 9th Dan in 2001 by the Shihankai of Shotokan Ryu Kase Ha. I know, I was there in Paris when his certificate was awarded. True to the man he said thank you and then said "right, let's do karate!"....

@sroedner Other than the possibly increased tempo, this looks like the standard Nakayama-Kanazawa version of the kata. What are the non-standard elements?

He was very fast when he was in his thirties, I saw him in the early 60's when he was not so heavy ( he was still plump ) and he moved quite well. He looks like he had a thyroid condition in his later years, which causes that puffy look.

Hey there, thanks for posting all these Kase videos, I follow his syllabus and have missed any chance of training with him now, it's great to at least see him in action after the fact. However I felt I should correct you as he was awarded 9th Dan after his death, never quite made it to 10th.

I don't know if it's the video or if he's doing this kata hella-fast, but if it's not the video, he's doing some of the slow parts way to fast!
