Suzuki Samurai climbing the Slickrock obstacle from which California's Slickrock Road earned its name. The big step at the bottom is a challenge for short wheelbase 4x4s with small tires, but you can make it when you take the right line.

This Samurai has a rear differential locker, open front diff, 31x12.5 Swamper SSR tires, and 6.4 Trail Tough transfer case gears with stock axle gears.

  • Nice video, I'm building a Sammy myself it already had a Calmini 3" body lift when I bought it. I was thinking about adding a SPOA kit and 31x10.50's. I also have a VW 1.6 TD I was thinking about swapping in. Did you see that white thing at the end of your video? Kind looks like a bird, but it flew straight up and disappeared, maybe it was a 'Rod' or an 'Orb'

  • @SeriousNot I think a 3 inch body lift plus a 5 inch SPOA is too much lift for 31's. These tires are 32" tall by 12.5" wide and I have a 2 inch body lift and the 3" RRO/Deaver leaf springs. If you go SPOA, I'd recommend ditching the body lift. Or since you already have the body lift, I'd just go with a nice set of soft flexy springs like these Deavers. FYI my buddy's Trail Gear 3" springs sit way taller than my RRO/Deaver springs, and they are super stiff. It rides rough and doesn't flex.

  • LOCKERS!!

  • @awphill Yes, without the rear locker I would not have been able to smoothly/slowly crawl up that slickrock; I would have had to use excessive speed and be unnecessarily hard on the Samurai if I only had open diffs front and rear.

  • The suspension is RRO's 3" Deaver springs in a spring-under configuration with 1" Trail Tough shackles, Rancho RS9000XL shocks, and Sky Mfg "upside down" highsteer linkage. For additional clearance, there's a 2" body lift to raise the rocker panels, gain fender clearance, and keep the center of gravity as low as possible. It works awesome!

  • Painful watching someone that doesnt have a clue try to 4x4

  • @nwma1830 I'm curious how exactly would you climb this obstacle, since you're apparently such an expert.

I for one think the guy did a great job climbing this section of rock. He was in complete control of his vehicle, tried a few different lines, picked a line that finally worked, didn't beat or bash on it, used as little throttle that was needed. Looked like he knew what he was doing to me, i'm not sure what video you watched that was SO painful. I get sick of watching dumb asses bashing through stuff on YouTube. Also, where are your Great and Glorious crawling videos so we can watch?

  • @nwma1830 I don't know what video you thought you were commenting on. Seriously a blind man could have seen that the driver was in complete control of his vehicle. I say he did a great job, the samurai itself was pretty impressive.

  • Thanks for the recommendations, do you have a part number for the springs you're using?

  • What is all exactly done to your suspension?

  • Good patience on that.. I get sick of watching videos with drivers bouncing off the rev limiter. Your Samurai is definitely one of my fav's too! Followed the video here from Expedition Portal, thanks for sharing.
