I had seen only a part of the movie as i was a teenager or maybee a young guy in the late eightees. For me gregorio was a hero fighting against surpressing policemen and racism. Racism is for me one of the most worst things on the planet. No matter where a Woman or Man is born! The only worth she or he has is from what they are doing. Hope we could learn this before we must like in the movie independance Day!

@Hendrikdevuile yes exactley what you said! he was misunderstood from the translater a poor spanish speaker and therfor misinterpreted by the Sherrif. But i see this sherrif as a surpressor who dont like to make a clear job because of majority of his authority and his stubborn will to teach this mexican who will be the stronger.. a modern policemen tends sometimes to be more polite for finding the truth. I hope so...

@MJ0428 In the case of G. Cortez the "interpreter" caused the fatal misunderstandings more probably through ignorance than ill will. The Italians say "Traduttore, traditore" (the translator is a traitor), but the Aztecs and Incas would still have been slaughtered or enslaved even if they had had a competent interpreter: Hernán Cortés did in fact have very good one, La Malinche his mistress, who spoke Mayan, Aztec and Spanish. But she aided the Spanish Conquest rather than her own people.
