Footage taken of Halston's famous townhouse NOV 26, 2006, designed by the architect Paul Rudolph and called ''extremely sophisticated, starkly modern'' by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 25-foot wide, four-story structure at 101 East 63d Street, off Park Avenue, has a three-story living room. It had been the Manhattan residence of Roy H. Frowick - better known as Halston, the clothing designer. Rudolph was the former chairman of the architecture department at Yale University. One of his hallmarks is the incorporation into urban residences of unusual gardens based on Oriental designs. The structure on East 63d Street was built about 1880 as a carriage house. In 1968, Mr. Rudolph completed his total renovation of what had been, in its latest incarnation, a garage, creating a strikingly dramatic facade of steel and dark glass and, within, a central atrium to serve as the focus of the residence. The main living quarters of the house include three bedrooms and three bathrooms. In addition to the unusual living room, which has a large fireplace, the structure features a three-story greenhouse planted with bamboo, an elevator to the upper stories, a kitchen and a garage.

The building's fourth level consists of a separate guest apartment with a living room and deck, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. The structure is in the Upper East Side Historic District. Included in the townhouse are custom furnishings, also designed by Mr. Rudolph.

Here are photos of the interior of this famous townhouse.

  • Please describe the interior of the townhouse. And what was Halston like ?

  • Halston died on March 26,1990 in San Francisco, CA.

  • Who took it over?

  • New owner Billionaire Playboy Gunther Sachs purchased the home, until his death by suicide on May 7, 2011 in Gtaad, Switzerland. I'm sure the townhouse is back on the market now.

  • Thank you for your comments, when I visited New York City for the first time this is one of places I wanted to visit, because all of the famous celebrities that passed through these doors, like Studio 54.

He was chicish and classy far above a number of femish designers today. Back when he was alive and in the spot light he gave me the spooks. He was soo ??ueer but in actuality today he would be rather normal. He was a type of posh, high ticket maturish fellow. He loved cigarettes and was rather handsome too.

Hello believe it or not the interior back when Halston owned it atleast was the slickest I have ever seen and I look at a lot of magazines. Its design was so intense it reminds me of a better time period. There is a book called Krueck and Sexton about some midwest architects and the showcase duplex super condo in it is huge but somehow inferior to Halstons townhouse. I am inclined to say its probably one of the worlds top five townhouses and easily.

  • the townhouse is currently for sale at a 38.9 million dollar asking price.

  • I had dinner there with Halston once.

  • When Halston moved to San Francisco (just before his death), he sold his townhouse at 101 East 63d Street to Gianni Agnelli, the Italian Fiat magnate, for five million dollars. I don't know how long Agnelli kept the house, I know it was a stunning home, Halston had a very classic taste.

When it does go back on the market, it'll probably be posted on SothebysRealty. com or ChristiesGreatEstates. com.
