Policy on Immigration Angers French Workers

Over 500 illegal workers from the catering, security and cleaning industries in Paris are participating in a strike in a bid to push for amnesty. The strikes are putting President Sarkozy, who came to power last year on pledges to crack down on illegal immigration, in a difficult position. ///

Sarkozy has repeatedly vowed not to hand out a blanket amnesty to illegal immigrants as neighboring Spain did in 2005.

Under his leadership, France ratcheted up expulsions, setting annual deportation targets.

In the Paris restaurant Chez Papa, Kebe Gaye, an illegal worker from Mali who has been living illegally in France since 1998 doesn't understand why he can't be given a legal status to work within the system.
