5/5/10: Tripler Ridge is a beast and it will crush you if you're not prepared for it. At 6 miles one way, this trail is brutal from start to finish and guess what? You have to go back down it! However, there is salvation if you can endure summit ridges that I call legendary in my books. From the summit of Tripler Ridge, one can proceed on the Ko'olau summit ridge to reach Pu'u Keahi a Kahoe, which sits on the middle ridge of Moanalua Valley, and then on over to the Haiku Stairs.

On this day, we made it to the backside of Stairway to Heaven all the way from Tripler Ridge! It's a long journey so for those wanting to reach the backside of the stairs, use Moanalua Middle Ridge instead!

If you decide to cross the Ko'olau summit ridge, the drop offs on both sides are incredible, more so than the summit ridge that leads up to Pu'u O Kona from Kuli'ou'ou Ridge Trail. Use EXTREME CAUTION when traversing this section, the drop off to one side falls all the way to windward side, over 3,000ft below! And then the other dropoff, down to Moanalua Valley, 2,000ft down!

DANGER: Do NOT attempt if you are not comfortable of what you see! As what Stuart Ball's hiking guide books say, "There's no shame in turning around if you do not like what you see!"

What a way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

  • 13.5? huh

  • @Highroller4747

Yup, that's 13 and a half climbs. One climb to me is up and down the stairs so since I did it one way only going down, it's only "half" a climb. lol
