WARNING: AUDIO IS AWFUL!

The date was 6-9-2002. Merl Saunders, who'd been playing at Haight Street Fairs ever since they began, had just suffered a stroke, and folks were wondering if he was going to survive. Family and friends assembled the Merl Saunders Band for the Haight Street Fair as a tribute to their dear friend that was in a hospital, trying to heal. This is a quick snippet from that show, feauring Vince Welnick, piano player for the Grateful Dead, the Tubes, and Missing Man Formation. You'll see some random images of Chet Helms, George Michalski, Lee Houskeeper, and other friends at this festive San Francisco performance in the Haight Ashbury district. You'll hear Vince sing a small sample of the Beatles song "Tomorrow Never Knows." The video is decent quality, but the audio is over-modulated. What do you want for free?

Rest in peace, Vince Welnick. Rest in peace, Chet Helms. We're going to miss you guys.

  • sounds like shit.

  • I completely agree. After Vince died, I wanted to share this performance, but it does sound awful, doesn't it?

If any audio experts feel like cleaning up this audio, or suggesting alternative recordings, I'm all ears... Contact me off-line, I'll re-edit, and repost it.

  • yeah it doesnt sound good at all, and i couldnt read that fast either

  • Hi, I recorded this show with good mics on a Sony d-6 and I just posted the whole thing on my blog at bluoz * dot* com. I also embedded this video on the same page "it crawled from the vault #25" so you can follow the link from your embed section and it should show up shortly

You can use any part of the audio if you think it might improve the video...Ialso have the Tubes with Vince the same day, and I'll post that next week :)

  • you know what how come that other fucker lesh man doesnt even grace his royal god presence in that filthy neighborhood anymore. fucking snob. whatever though i dont really care

  • I met vince a few times before his death...I remember him one time in upstate n.y. at a summer festival, after the music was over, vince came out and joined us all at the drum circle...he was a great guy, and incredibly talented- his range was huge and, like Jerry, could pull a request out of his hat like nothin'...Vince, ya broke my heart, baby!

  • SCREW the sound quality! It's not an F'ing demo tape, it's a tribute to the man. I've met Vince and he was really friendly and it did'nt look like an act. He was not a "full of himself" musician. Thanx for the clip!!!
