WHAT ARE FURRIES?
The "Furry Fandom" is a term to describe the growing community with an appreciation for 'anthropomorphic' (humanlike) animal characters in fiction. Examples include: the cast of Looney Tunes, various Disney characters, the Redwall book series, and so forth. Emerging from science-fiction conventions, the Furry community took off as an internet subculture. Most participants (called "furries") create an original animal character to represent themselves as a personal avatar, and they use this "fursona" to interact with others. Participation varies, but common aspects include: costuming, drawing, puppeteering, animation, role-playing, and attending annual conventions.

OUR MISSION
When the furry fandom has comes to light in popular media, it has often been sensationalized. We envision a film that steps beyond the aesthetic spectacle of the community and explores the fandom in more depth. In particular, we are interested in placing this subculture against a social background to examine the "human element" of being furry. We will place a particular emphasis on how "being furry" contributes to identity construction, how the fandom is structured as a community, and how the fandom influences (or is influenced by) mainstream society.

This is an independent film, based in Dayton, Ohio. The footage in this trailer was shot on-location in Columbus, Ohio.

  • Not all furries are fursuiters,

I'm a type of furry that don't have one.

  • @PleomaxHD We very much agree, and this point will be stressed in the finished film. This will be supported through statistical data obtained in our interview with Dr. Kathy Gerbasi, author of "Furries from A to Z".

  • Keep me posted when It comes out :-)

  • @KaristaSwiss We don't have a release date yet, but our tentative goal is to complete the film by July of 2012.

  • @TheFurryMovie Great to hear. I look forward to seeing the film.

  • If I were able to, I'd donate to this documentary... We need something like this to enlighten the furry subculture =D Take it from me and a fair number of other people, you don't have to have a fursuit to be a Furry.

  • *shrugs* Haters gonna hate, and people bitch about Furries as much as they do about Sci-Fi fans or Horror fans. I could even go as far as to say even Religious folk. But the one thing they all have in common is that they aren't all the same. There are people who enjoy their fandom but don't fit the 'Stereotype' of what that fandom is, but hey, we're all different. Doesn't mean people have to poke their heads out and be bullies about it. Because apparently it's too hard to get along nowadays...

  • Please finish it by JUNE of 2012 so we can show it at CaliFur. Huh huh, please? ^^

  • I like the video, and i am a furry, but i do not have a suit for it. I want one, but i know i can;t right now.

  • To outsiders, we look SO BIZZARE.. but it's something that means a lot to us. Being Furry is something very special. I was at that convention! It was Morphicon! OMg I has so much FUN there!

  • @Howlgram We do not have a set release date yet, but we expect the film to be completed by the end of spring in 2012. You can find links in the description to our Facebook and Twitter pages; you can follow the film's progress through these sites.

  • @Shahamu That is a legitimate concern, but it will not be. We fully respect the depth of the furry community, as well as acknowledge that the individual best defines his or her own furry identity. With this in mind, we intend to allow many different furs explain what being furry means to them, and contrasting viewpoints are expected and may even be highlighted.
