According to the AMA safety code, spectators aren't allowed until AFTER an aircraft has been deemed airworthy. Murphy's Law sure bit John in the ass, on this flight....

Well buddy, this club isn't AMA so don't assume there was a violation. Secondly, John is an accomplished jet guy who only uses the best equipment and thoroughly checks his stuff out. This was simply a malfunctioning flap servo. No amount of inspection can determine if u have a bad one. All flight controls were checked before it flew. As the saying goes, stuff happens.

No, rive2001 isn't the field owner, just some schmuck.

The owner & pilot said that at the time things went awry, he had just retracted the flaps. He carefully reviewed the video on his HD TV frame by frame and was able to determine that the right flap did not retract, causing unwanted drag. Probably a faulty servo.

The fuel tank is only used as a temporary fuel source before takeoff so as not to use up the internal tank. It is removed prior to take off. We think the crash may have been caused by a failure in one of the control surfaces, possibly one of the flaps failed to retract.
