The beautiful towns of Cusco, Oyantaytambo, Pisac and Chinchero, in the Urubamba or Sacred Valley of Peru. Cusco was an Incan capitol. The Spanish destroyed and rebuilt much of it, five hundred years ago. The main Cathedral and the Jesuit Church (Compania de Jesus) open onto Plaza de Armas. The town is surrounded by mountains. On one, overlooking the town from an area to the north called Sacsayhuaman, is a large statue of Jesus, with outstretched arms.
Continuing north to the Urubamba River, in an agricultural region, is Pisac, a town with a large, busy market. West along the Urubamba River are the towns of Urubamba and then Oyantaytambo. Southwest of Urubamba are the Salineras, man-made ponds, running up a mountain face, where water is evaporated to collect salt. Oyantaytambo was a fortress and farming settlement and a modern town continues there today. It is about midway on the rail line from Cusco to Machupicchu.
