I was in the boy scouts, and I'm an atheist. Penn, please don't blame the young boys in the scouts for something that a higher power in the organization decides. I understand that it can sometimes be questionable that it is a private organization with government funds, but when I was in the scouts, I built trails in public parks, benches in cities, and even built a small dock for people to fish into a lake. @zofspade yours is of course the most practical opinion. i agree with you on some level, i was in boy scouts myself as a kid and was just trying to make friends. politics was beyond me at that point in my development, but i recall now as an adult my well intentioned and community minded scout leaders discussing how they thought the blacks in my country were "dole bludgers" and how immigrants should be thrown out, ect.

(Part 2) The review members gave me a puzzled look on their face and it seemed obvious that it really hadn't occured to them. Point is, the discrimination against gays and atheist are two terrible flaws of the organization -- but there are plenty of positive aspects of the organization (If you're in the right troop, some are full of ass holes..) Unfortunately, these flaws still keep me from thinking of getting Eagle Scout as such a high honor. The bigotry really sickens me.
