Luke Skywalker's Land Speeder could become a reality

A Japanese research team at Tohoku University has built a vehicle which floats just above the ground just like Luke Skywalker's Land Speeder did in Star Wars.

It uses something called 'ground effect' which basically is like flying only just a few inches from the floor.

This actual device is called Aero Train and because it hovers inches above the tarmac, there is no rolling resistance and so it's electric motors can propell itto 124mph.

As the name suggests, the idea of this prototype is as a passenger train. The developers say that if it ever becomes a reality, the full-scale production version could possibly travel within a tunnel capped with solar panels that send power directly to the vehicle's batteries.
