As Al Jazeera looks back at Obama's first year in office and ahead to the next, we assess the issues he faces in trying to cultivate good relations with China.

The communist country has sentenced a prominent human rights dissident and democracy activist to 11 years in prison - the latest move that has further soured relations with Washington.

It comes as US company Google loses tolerance over Beijing's censorship laws and threatens to quit it.

Al Jazeera's Gerald Tan reports on the state of US and China's current relations and asks what may lie ahead for the two global superpowers.
