Ahh it's so weird hearing my last name in a song. I'm a direct decedent Anthony Drexel, the founder of the college. Not sure if I'm going to be attending yet though.

According to Drexel Archives the first reference to the "Dragons" occurred on October 17, 1928 in The Drexel Triangle (the school newspaper). The headline of an article on the football team reads: "Drexel Dragons Make Astounding Record as Victorious Team." By January 1929, The Triangle expanded the use of the term "Dragons" to refer to the basketball team. Later, the term was applied to all Drexel sports' teams.

In 1931, the Drexel Athletic News printed a full page of Drexel related songs, including the first "Fight Song." This version, likely written in the 1920s, was printed in every edition of the Athletic News up until 1938.

Sorry. The dragon only recently become the mascot. It seems a tad anachronistic that a song from the 1920s would reference the current mascot.

Actually, the cheer emerged around the same time that Drexel athletics became an officially recognized and supported part of Drexel student life. It can be found in the 1924 version of the student yearbook, the Lexerd. With a new commitment from the school's administration, came a new school spirit anchored by the activity of the "Dragons."
