Gene Screen BC 2011 Participant.
Christie, a deaf female who has struggled with her inability to have children, visits a fertility clinic with another woman, Michelle. The pair are informed about the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). They are informed by a genetic counselor that a growing understanding of the genetic basis of some forms of deafness has made it possible to select for or against a deaf child. The pair reflects on the social and ethical implications surrounding IVF/PGD from the perspective of the deaf community.

  • Are these lesbians?

  • @TheYipedo I find your remark to be offensive. The issue at hand is choosing a deaf child or a HEARING child. Nobody said anything about not choosing a HEALTHY child. The Deaf woman made it clear in the video that being healthy has nothing to do with being a hearing person. And choosing a deaf child is not AT ALL like your example.

  • So, did they decide to have a deaf child? It was unclear.

  • Very nice little video here I stumbled on. Jumping right into the issue, I think it's completely despicable to systematically CHOOSE a deaf child over a healthy one. It's like naming your child something really funny, even if the name means something deeply sentimental to you, you still caused unnecessary suffering for the child. Choosing a deaf child is much worse than that. I'm not saying deaf people can't be happy, but there are some things in life that shouldn't be taken away from any child.

  • I meant "criteria GENE SCREEN" is looking for lol

  • LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS FILM!!! Congratulations you guys! I'm confident that you will win first prize based on all the criteria you are looking for. It's a beautiful film and very thought provoking....I hope to discuss this with my classmates and maybe even at a coffee night with the community. I know how much time and hard work goes into making film so bravo! You've done an amazing job with this. :)

  • Bravo Benny - moving and informative. Good luck!

  • Hey @TheJJackson25 thanks for your feedback. Can I ask where you take your studies?

  • Thought provoking. Well done.

  • We watched this yesterday in my deaf studies class - its interesting - but I don't think that people should choose to have children with deafness
