Why I Will Never Keep Saltwater Aquarium Fish

I have nothing against saltwater aquarium fish in fact, I quite admire them. They are incredibly beautiful and awe inspiring. Learning about saltwater aquarium fish is a little like learning about life on another planet, as their way of life is so incredibly different from ours. Their fascinating behaviors, as well as their beauty have made them increasingly popular among aquarists. But you wont catch me keeping them as pets.

Depleting The World's Oceans

Scientific studies of the world's oceans are getting grimmer with each new report. The seemingly impossible is happening the seas are running out of fish. Although most of these disappearing fish stocks are due to commercial fishing and pollution, for some species, the culprit has been the pet fish trade.

Have you ever stopped to think where the fish in pet stores come from? For most freshwater fish, they come from captive-bred stocks that have lived all of their lives in tanks or other man-made environments that they have grown used to. All types of aquarium goldfish are all domesticated fish, for example.

But this is not the case for saltwater aquarium fish that enter the pet trade. They have captured as babies or as adults from the ocean, slapped in a bucket and then shipped thousands of miles to live in artificial environments that usually cannot keep their tank water healthy enough for them to survive. Over 50% of all ocean-captured fish die before reaching the pet store. And that's even before they're sold to people who might not have a clue as to how to take care of them.

And Then, The Money Factor

Although the filtration and water circulation systems have greatly improved for the keeping of saltwater fish in the last dozen or so years, one other important factor keeps me from ever keeping saltwater aquarium fish money. A common baby goldfish averages about fifteen cents (US), while a clown fish costs hundreds of dollars. And that's just for the fish.

Saltwater aquarium fish need a large investment of your time, energy and especially your money. You need specialized food, water chemistry sets, filters, sump pumps, overflow boxes and water chillers (as opposed to water heaters). Because not much is known about the proper care and feeding of saltwater fish, you need to do a lot of personal research and experimentation on your own time in order to try and keep even one of these fish alive.

  • Most clown fish are $5 wholesale. The markup is the Pet Store (Scam) to cover the deaths of the other 5 they kill. The pet industry wants to sell more junk to keep them alive than what is actually needed which give the impression "It's too expensive". Although I do not condone the keeping of fish in tanks I do recommend you research BEFORE you buy.

  • Dude u are a fagot and clearly have no knowledge of saltwater tanks. Do your research before making yourself look so ignorant

  • @MrDk1122 some clown fish can cost up to 300 but normally 15-25 sometimes cheaper.

  • Seems like you no nothing about salt water aquariums so i will dislike your stupid video.

  • Clownfish cost like $25, and its VERY rare to see a well kept, nice looking, and clean freshwater tank Fuck U

  • n u claim tat saltwater fish keeping is more expensive n difficult to keep ? while it does appear to be more expensive, do u kno that fresh water planted tanks re even more tough to keep than reef tanks ? its ppl like you who contribute to giving something a bad name when in reality u kno nothing bout ! stop discouraging the average beginner hobbyist .

  • you can verify wat i ve said from many scientific journals ! its true that many species of saltwater re fished from wild but the industry is working on breeding as we speak as wild specimens re disadvantageous to the aquarist. most collection centers re being developed to handle catching n transporting in a safe n sustained way ! n if u think satwater hobbyists re careless bout fish, fresh water ppl re ten times that ! the fact tat u think clown fish costs hundreds of dollars tells u kno nothing

  • while it irritates me how u re claiming something u ve absolutely no idea about, im going to refrain from verbal abuse. first of all im a hobbyist just like most ppl n i m not biased towards the pet fish industry. pls get ur facts straight regarding over fishing of the reefs for the pet fish market ! compared to most industries it is the most eco friendly ! take for instance coral fragging n exchange or captive bred specimens like clownfish or dottybacks ! most re dieing due to global warming !

  • oh well when i get my tank i will try my hardest to make sure every fish gets along which they should since i have researched this for many months and then will breed them naturally (no sponges to catch the fry just anemone and the fry have to survive) but it should be amazing and unfortinutly this vid has the opposite effeect on me i want to do something about it so i will help my fish

  • @MrDk1122 its so expensive because its been dipped in fairy dust and gold oh you can find it at any imaginary fish store
