On May 1st, 2011 DOC opened the Heaphy Track to Mountain Bikers for the first time in many years. A week later two keen groups of Macpac staff and partners headed up to either end of the track for a weekend of fun. After an extremely wet day of riding both groups met up in the James Mackay Hut for a cosy night and rode out the next day.

The Heaphy offered us stunning scenery, an amazing track and rain... plenty of rain.

Tip #1: Make sure you ride with good company like we did. This is a ride you want to share with your friends!

Tip #2: Bring spare brake pads! A combination of rain, sand, mud and grit makes them wear even quicker than a set of eardrums at a Justin Bieber concert.

Tip #3: If you finish on the Karamea side, treat yourself to a night in the 'Last Resort' ( www.lastresort.co.nz ) - a great place to wind down, share tall tales, have a soak in the spa and enjoy a good meal and a few beverages of choice.

  • Good video guys, next time you should stop and check out KARAMEA!

  • @warrigulbartlett: We did actually stay at the Last Resort in Karamea (tip #3). A great place to wind down and treat yourself to some good food and well deserved drinks. I was too knackered to get the camera out, so no video proof but I can assure you we all had a great time in Karamea and are looking forward to our next visit.

  • looks great but keep bikes off the decks, are you trying to ruin this for everyone in the first month

  • You should look at get a Go Pro head camera. Just search Go pro on here and see what I mean, it'd be awesome for biking.

  • Top work! *respect*

  • Great job guys, we can't wait to ride the track either. We just hope the weather's a bit better than what you experienced...

  • Cool nice video, bloody good effort riding!
