Thanks for your comment, Replacing the headlamps with LED is actually a less costly way to save the same amount of energy a roof mounted PV array can produce.

that is to say until PV panels get more efficent for the footprint required.

update!

New software allows us to install a large battery pack, then drive up to 74 MPH without using Gasoline. then engage the gas engine or not depending how far down the accelerator is pressed.

Hello Dahorn, this experiment allowed us and others to move forward with other forms of prius hacking , including adding a 10kw/h lithium pack.

there are now hundreds of second generation prius cars converted to plug-in's

Easy, the Prius has an electrically operated scroll compressor,

it bolts to the block in the traditional location.

of course the condenser would also need to be installed.

Hello Dave. The plugin conversion movement is very large. it has been our experience that 5kw/ hour is about the smallest battery pack that will give any decent range. also top speed without a gas (I.C.E) engine will be 52. two companies offer hardware/software modifications to force the prius to spin the ICE giving extremely high gas mileage when driving faster than 52 mph.

those are plugin conversions and plugin supply. a different bms system is required!, dtcs must be cleared or spoofed.

this is a good idea, ZERO emission prius, but the car was not designed that way so surely it must need more frequent charging than a purpose built electric car

Here in Europe Diesel is over rated and expensive and too complicated and now not very reliable because of all the crap technology to clean exhaust ! Our tax system is based on C02 emissions which forced lower C02 cars (mainly Diesels) to drive in cities and towns while emitting dangerous exhaust emissions, and that is not acceptable. Particle filters are not so good at filtering the worst of the exhaust and can have major expensive problems! Diesels should be banned!

Diesels in Europe 70-80 mpg (U.K) average? I don't think so! Diesels are good but not that good and I have been driving them for years! Even the polo Bluemotion can't and certainly can't in towns. Diesels may be good on the motorway but in town that mpg goes way down! And the polo bluemotion may be one of the most efficient cars you can buy, but I would never drive one, tiny, ugly inside, very slow. Prius faster, no diesel rattle, and bigger. My average is 62 in town 53 on motorway!!!
