NINE TIMES BLUES
Sung by Michael Nesmith with the backing vocals of Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones

There's a certain something in the way
You looked at me and said you'd stay
That let me know that I was out of line,
But I didn't know what else to do,
And like a fool, I tested you,
By demanding things of you which weren't mine.
And now I feel like such a fool
For making you crawl back to me,
But you did it with such love,
That you're standing far above
Me and all I did to you,
I'm sorry now, what can I do?
I know that never in the world,
Could I have found me such a girl,
Who's there to pick me up before I fall,
And if, in the end, we should go
Both our separate ways, I know
The lesson I've learned here is worth it all.
And now I feel like such a fool
For making you crawl back to me,
But you did it with such love
That you're standing far above
Me and all I did to you,
I'm sorry now, what can I do?
I know that never in the world,
Could I have found me such a girl,
Who's there to pick me up before I fall,
And if, in the end, we should go
Both our separate ways, I know
The lesson I've learned here is worth it all.

EVERYBODY LOVES A NUT
Sung by Michael Nesmith, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, and Jonny Cash

Everybody loves a nut
The whole world loves a weirdo
Brain's are in a rut
But, everybody loves a nut

There was a hermit named Fred
Who kept a dead horse in his cave
And everyone said to Fred
"Fred, how come you keep a dead horse in your cave?"
And he said
"Well"

Everybody loves a nut
The whole world loves a weirdo
Brain's are in a rut
But, everybody loves a nut

A Columbia man named Frank
Had a tiger, the tiger's
name was Hank and he tried to
put Hank in his tank
Guess what happened to old Frank?
"The tiger killed him."
Well,
"The tiger ate him up."
When they picked up his teeth,
hair and eyeballs.

Everybody loves a nut
The whole world loves a weirdo
Brain's are in a rut
But, everybody loves a nut

Another Columbian fella
Told Queen Isabella
I don't think the world is flat
Now what do you think about that?
And she said "You don't?"
And he said "No mamme"
And she said "You get outta my Queendom"

Everybody loves a nut
The whole world loves a weirdo
Brain's are in a rut
But, everybody loves a nut

Everybody loves a nut
The whole world loves a weirdo
Brain's are in a rut
But, everybody loves a nut

  • Mike was probably the only one who knew how to read music

  • @switcherxx In the start of it Mike and Peter played instruments. But, Micky came along and can play too. Davey sort of can but definatly not to the extent of Mike. I think Peter is the most instrumental one though.

  • This is one of my favorite Monkees clips. Just about the only thing that could have made it better would be, well, if Peter hadn't left. They all just look so happy and are having so much fun. It makes me smile every time I see it.

And in Nine Times Blue, their harmonies are soooo pretty. I wish they'd recorded this version.

  • @agapelloauthor Comments like that make me smile. :D

  • @Patchie97 U r so right. I still consider The Monkees real musicians even though they all didn't always play on their albums. I hate what some people say about them not being a fake band or they didn't really play thier instruments. More bands or singers do less now then The Monkees did. The Monkees wrote songs, played instruments, & sang. If that's not what a musician is then I don't know what is. I luv The Monkees!

  • @elfhermie I never disliked them... yeah, Peter probably could read music too... a singer doesn't reall need to - it was a big turning point for the third LP when they performed all the instruments themselves...Have you seen the movie Daydream Believers? They had a wide range of styles, remember they were put together by the producers, not by themselves. Perhaps if they found another producer, or did their own production when the show was cancelled, things may have been interesting.

  • @switcherxx All of them knew how to read music. Davy played the Artful Dodger in Oliver! and actor/performers in musicals are almost always given sheet music to read/learn. They're all great in their own way. Micky's one of the best singers of all time in my opinion (fantastic emotional phrasing). Davy's got terrific showmanship and rocks at syrupy ballads (watch any of his live "I'll Love You Forever" videos). Mike and Peter are musical geniuses (Peter - instruments, Mike - song writing).
