The American version of "So You Think You Can Dance" recently had its fifth season premiere. And for the first time in the history of the reality TV dance show, a ballroom couple consisting of two male dancers auditioned for the chance to compete for the crown of America' favourite dancer.
The reaction of the judges to their pairing was anything but favourable. Lythgoe's comments come on the heels of a surprise win on the eighth season of another TV reality hit, American Idol, where millions vote for their favourite pop star-in-the-making. The surprise came when the more sexually ambiguous but talented Adam Lambert -- nicknamed Glambert -- lost to a folksier, married and arguably less talented singer, Kris Allen. Today we're asking is reality television and its audience ready for a gay reality icon? Rex Harrington is an internationally-renowned ballet dancer and guest judge on the first season of "So You Think You Can Dance" Canada. Rachel Giese is a cultural observer and current senior editor of Chatelaine Magazine.

  • Oh please ... Just look at Kupono and Brandon. Effeminate? Ooooh yeah, but not on the dance floor. Travis Wall is gay too. Give me a break. Over-reaction to the max!

  • Nigel is ignorant and probably a suppressed gay. Adam is brave, honest, guy with integrity.

  • The easy response is that the situation is the result of crazed Bible thumpers, but it's so much more far-reaching than that. It's embedded in culture and tradition as well. At least the terrible bullying of young gays is, in the last year or so, being recognized by the media. The latest suicide of the young musician being spied on by his peers is, and again thanks to the easy spread of news now, made much more prominent than previously.

  • @AnneMorr The cultural situation you speak about was not made by gays themselves. If there are contradictions they are the result of socio-cultural conditions imposed under heterocentric dominance

  • @AnneMorr I don't think you're suppose to see gay as being part of the mixture of "talent", they're both different entities that should be considered independent of each other. I think Adam was representing the gay community as someone who can actually sing, and I definitely think he can, , which is why there was so much support for him, and there was why there was so much controversy when he didn't win.

  • @HantoKah I certainly think so. Of course USA is a very wide country and depends on where you look but here in Spain I think the society is more open and flexible in order to adapt to different form of living. Cheers

  • @pep6666 So you mean that the culture in Spain is more gay-friendly than that in the USA?

  • i have heaps of gay friends, guys and gals... they are all very close friends with me, and i am straight.. i love adam lambert because he is very outspoken with his beliefs and isnt afraid to show himself to the world.

yes im a straight female from australia... :) ive loved adam since watching his audition on american idol, without even knwoing about his sexuality, i loved his honesty, and his performance style, and his voice.

  • Since when does being gay make you more interesting, talented, or a better artist? Since when does it make you more special? If we deny them anything at all, then it automatically makes us homophobic? You want to be treated the same, then you want to be treated differently at the same time. If you suck, you suck but you should not be accepted just because your gay and the show needs someone "different". People voted for Adam for a number of different reasons, including him being gay.

  • lolololol look at the satun necklace , fuckin pawns lololol
