Operatic and theatrical in the right way. Very memorable and evocative. Total theatrical truth. Horowitz took the same perspective on this piece. He, playing this, should have been included in the musical, Cabaret.
-
He possesses some of the qualities Klaus Kinski had in acting.

1) This is awesome, but it wouldn't be if I hadn't heard about 5,000 no-name piano competition contestants play this piece soulessly and perfectly. But seriously, the attempt at jocularity at like 9:35 giving way to total demonic wash of sound -- truly Mephistophelian!
2) That is not the face of a man who was married 10 times.

If this pianist is a reincarnation of Liszt, I wonder if Liszt also had such a technique..

@BrentAudi I know you posted this two years ago and may not even be following this thread, but you are spot on with your critique. Mephisto is a 'flippin demon' ... it ought to sound tortured, chaotic and even messy. The music verges on insanity and the antiseptic versions of the 'mistakeless robocops' as Entertainer Classical put it offer almost nothing by comparison but showmanship of the technical aspects while missing the spirit of the composition.

Absolutly NOT boring !!!! I enjoyed it, interesting, sometimes fantastic, beautiful, sometimes crazy, sometime just forgatten, but the whole performance 100 times better than many famous, great name pianists today, who are just dry boring and grey, without mistakes. I dont give a p for the mistakeless robocops if I can enjoy this kind of humanic performance.

hmm... and I thought Horowitz slammed a lot

@volodya2 it was 1972. By the late 70's he did not even bother to attempt to play hard music.
I think this is awesome!
I am not sure what transcription this is, but I think his playing really pulls out the craziness of this piece. Let's all remember this is a work about "Mesphisto". It is not supposed to be pretty!
I love his interpretation.
Do you know what year this was recorded and where?
Thanks for posting!
I love it!
