At Lumpy54 Where are you located? The States use their Lifeguard training through ELLIS or Red Cross. We're Canadian. We get trained through the Lifesaving Society our certification is called National Lifeguard Service. (NLS) We're trained to plug the victims nose carry them up then transition into a control carry. Think of humans as a water bottle.. when you put a bottle underwater and bring it up towards the surface without the lid , it fills up.. that's what happens to our lungs we fill up.
Any Lifeguard who uses an aid to rescue a dns should probably not be lifeguard!!! It should always be your life over theirs. NLS your LADDER approach pretty much goes out the window. LOL
Actually Red Cross has just recently (last 2-3 years or so) created their own version of the NLS course. It is possible to receive lifeguard training through the Red Cross, although it's not as popular or well-known as the LSS NLS course.
there is no such thing as a Red Cross Lifeguard. NLS is conducted by the Lifesaving Society and has barely anything to do with Red Cross. This is a submerged victim carry, and it wasn't that bad except for the throwing of the aid. I have my NLS Pool + Waterpark, and Water Safety Instructors (WSI) course.
