I hope this video will help clear the confusion between the Japanese and Asian Mega Drive variations.

I'm no expert on the matter but this information is correct to the best of my knowledge and research.

Many Thanks for his assistance.

  • @davidofchinkov41 Only have JP machines now and know more about those, but did have PAL Mega Drive as a kid with filed cartridge slot!

  • From my research, there's an Asian Mega Drive as depicted on the SEGAGAGA site. There's a later Asian Mega Drive in a very similar box however the controller conforms to the Japanese standard (red buttons, trigger above.) There's a Japanese Mega Drive which is the same on all accounts to what you would expect however it omits the (R) symbol. There's also a Japanese Mega Drive that came bundled with Sonic & another with Columns, both of which come in a different box.

  • @SentinelGames Yeah there's others in addition to the ones I've shown, just like you've mentioned. Seen the Sonic bundle console quite a few times on Ebay etc.. Cheers for the comment :)

  • I had the one at 5:30 as a child (age 6). I only learnt it was an Asian one years later and always wondered how and why my parents got me that particular model instead of the more common European model. I always thought everyone else had a weird Mega Drive because they were white instead of red/blue. I remember tearing the paper off and finding that box on my birthday. My dad told me it was full of socks.

  • @thefadedline Sounds like a good memory. Cheers for the comment :)

  • had that one at 2:35, i guess thats the asian model? brought back alot of memories :),

streets of rage, road rash, james bond, predator 2

  • @oldmonkboy It's the MK1 Japanese version. Loved Road Rash- what a great idea that was, motorbike racing paired with kicking the sh*t out of each other. Genius :)

  • what is the 9 extension port used for on the back ? I tried looking it up and found no information

  • why was it called the genesis in america only? its like km/hr vs. MPH all over again.

  • they're both 60htz.. thank god! thanks for clarifying that.. i just bought an asian MD on ebay boxed, modded for 50 quid.. i thought it was jap! lol.. but as long as its still the full speed and such.. thats ok

  • Oh ok, I guess I have the Asian one.. Also I have the original Sega Megadrive (US Models) badged the "Genesis" models 2 and 3... I really want the Sega Mega CD!!!! :(

  • what about UK ones?

  • @ianwilson1978 I actually have two Japanese Mega Drives. One with the (R) symbol the other without. I used to think that the ones without the (R) symbol were Asian Mega Drives however have since discovered this not to be true. The one without the (R) symbol comes in the usual Japanese box with the usual controller and all serials are matching, so it''s not a case of the console being put in the wrong box.
