Organ transplant groups firmly oppose the suggestion by a kidney specialist that Australians be allowed to sell their organs to people desperate for a transplant.

Australian laws deem illegal selling or buying organs, carrying a penalty of six months' jail and fines of $4,400.

Senior Canberra nephrologist Gavin Carney believes changing the law would save thousands of lives and billions of dollars spent caring for patients who are left languishing on the organ waiting list for up to 10 years, Fairfax says.

More than 1,800 people are waiting for a kidney transplant in Australia but only 343 kidneys were donated last year, forcing some patients to travel to countries such as Pakistan and India to buy organs for up to $30,000 on the black market.

Transplant Australia chief executive Chris Thomas believes such a move will leave poor and desperate people vulnerable.

"It really focuses on the poor and people who are least able to pay for things in society. They get attracted to these types of things," he told ABC Radio.

"We'd reject that.

"We'd also be concerned about what's going to happen in the long term.

"If you accept the fact that poor people are going to look at these types of stories and think well, maybe that's for me, they're probably also more likely to suffer from lifestyle diseases later in life and may end up needing a kidney transplant themselves at some stage in the future because of our increasing rates of obesity."

Kidney Australia director Dr Tim Matthews says the focus should be on getting more Australians to donate their organs.

"It's a sign of how desperate things are, and in particular how desperate some people feel, having waited for a kidney for some years without any result," he told the ABC.

"The state of South Australia has had twice the rate of organ donation that NSW has had over the last 10 years.

"There's no central reason why NSW can't match that."

personally If the goverment allows such practices to take place . People that are in dept may seek to sell organs . I can see this becoming a future issue , when your body and it organs become viewed as assets , not by you or me but by banks , NGO's , the government . When dept slaves are viewed themselves as being part of the payment or payback option . this can't start . But if it does it will start out small and painted in the media as in peoples interests . And I guessing if it is being dragged up in the fox media , then it is going ahead as the media likes to soften up the masses to the idear of something before implementing it . However I think it has already been decided we are only now being informed to see how the people react . There is a lot being setup right now with , food , oil , realestate , the currency , people have to wake up to what is going on around them we are being setup for depression and it is designed and carryed out by the media , big business , the banks , and the political puppets in power all working in with this same agenda . We have to wake people up and look at what is really going on around you .

  • I live in Canada...I don't drink...give me 50 grand and I'll give you my kidney.

  • STEM CELL RESEARCH. Grow organs damn it! Simple.

  • with or with out your permission. and if you put your self on the doner regestry on your drivers licenses they will watch you die to get your Valueable body parts. thats how they thank you for the donation. I feel a good rate is betwixt 100,000-200,000

in a clean hospital setting. Non taxable as our gov and corperations put us in the situation in the first place.

  • No Joke now we are allowed to sell hair blood seman etc the buyers get these products of your body for low amounts of money. that doesnt benefit the seller and definately doesent benefit the doner who donates for free. Ask your self what is a kidney worth? a lot to the surgeon and the hospital the procedure takes place in. and i will go as far to say if you put organ doner on your licenses and get in a wreck they will let you die so they can harvest your kidney any way.

  • Whatever happened to altruistic motivations...???

  • organ donation should be made mandatory. If a person dies, the hospital should be entitle of using one organ per person.

  • Arrests were made in a recent organ-trafficking and money-laundering FBI sting operation which implicated five Talmudic rabbis from New York and neighboring New Jersey. This international rabbinical operation spanned from Jewish-entrenched New York to the Jewish state of Israel. The FBI used an informant, a Talmudic Jew named Solomon Dwek, to approach the rabbis — who were from the Syrian Jewish community in Brooklyn NY and Deal NJ. Homeless people living in these areas have been disappearing.

  • it should be legal . if it were I would sell my kidney. I realy need 50k .

  • Love for money is the root of all evil. - The Bible

Bu then, the Jews love money too much!

Therefore, Jews must be root of all evil.

  • i think that is grotescous for people who are desperate for money to allow them to sell their organs.
