it does not fail on its own, it fails from bad programs.
repositories is something totally different from a registry. registry stores all of your preferences for your applications and Windows. in Linux its just a bunch of scattered config files across your HDD. Repositories are software archives, your package manager syncs to these to download applications, and updates. if your Package manger breaks (often does) then you have to fix it, or face dependency hell by compiling apps.

And then watch as an entire system falls apart due to it. Repositories in Linux are just fine, thank you. Automatic defrag on each app install on OSX is fine thank you.
