  • @BoisDuBlanche Because marketing people thought he would sell. Most of the opera singers who have become this famous are actually some of the worst singers out there. Netrebko, Dessay, Keenlyside, Gunn, Kaufman- they would fail undergraduate voice juries. But someone decided they were good looking enough, and were connected enough, to promote them. And that is why opera is having such trouble- idiots in charge putting idiots on stage.

  • If everyone else seem to be better, why is then SK one of the most sought after baritones of today? I am not a music professional, just a consumer, and from that point of view I always prefer SK's captivating stage presence and character portrayal to any perfect vocal technician. Opera is, after all, supposed to be a stage performance... And if he isn't bad (and he definitely isn't), why the snide comments?

  • @Agorante And like I said, it all depends on what you're looking for...Dmitri's great, but he's more of a Verdi Baritone than a Lyric Baritone (ie Keenlyside and Hampson)...

  • @jpg0901 I wasn't trying to make some esoteric vocal point. There are too many voice experts on YouTube who want to explain that so-and-so should cover his uvula or some such advice. My comment was innocent of guile. This is a big simple melody that allows the baritone to show off the color, power and brilliance of his voice. Keenlyside isn't bad it's just that almost everyone else is rather better.

  • @Agorante Well, I think what each person says is "best" all depends on what they're looking for. Dmitri is def one of the best out there, no doubt about that...but I personally like both Hampson and Keenlyside along with Dmitri. They're the ones I listen to when trying to learn arias that look easy, though getting the mechanics of it are hard. I will admit though, Dmitri does a much better job with this one than Keenlyside does...

  • I suppose he's a fine colleague. He seems to be a good musician. And I'm sure his kids love him. But alas, he doesn't have much of a voice.

YouTube is filled with famous baritones who sing this rather easy aria.. I just sampled Merrill, Warren and Bastianini. All very different and all miles better than Simon here. Hvorovtosky is probably the best of those now singing. Hampson too is better. Even Bryan Schxneider (sp?) a second tier Met baritone or years ago was better.

  • Fantastic!!!! There are actually people who dislike this?

(enfin d'essayer..)

  • I really like that he sings aaah's instead of awww's. I really opens the language for me :)
