Our kids are raising four Painted Lady butterflies from Insect Lore (http://www.insectlore.com). After the caterpillar stage comes the chrysalis stage, followed by the butterfly stage. After three of our four caterpillars became chrysalids overnight, we hooked up the camcorder to try and catch the last one. This video is a snapshot of the key action of shedding the skin to reveal the chrysalis, running at 2x speed to better show the movement of the skin as it is shed.
There are better videos of this process elsewhere online, but this one we can call our very own. :)
There is a longer version available at the original 1x speed showing even after chrysalis formation the twisting and lurching that goes on for up to about 10 minutes after the skin is shed. I will upload that version later.
Enjoy!
