youtuber "iwantcoolname" has taken one of my deep mandelbrot fractal zoom videos and he has very cleverly constructed a mercator mandelbrot map from it. you can visit his youtube channel here
http://www.youtube.com/user/iwantcoolname

This type of map is a single image of the whole zoom! - with the starting point at the left edge of the image and the final destination of the zoom at the other end - in this video the image is simply scrolled in front of the camera.

The idea of a mercator map is to focus on a point in or near the Mandelbrot set, and create an image where one direction is the logarithm of the distance and the other one is the angle.

This map projection is conformal, so it does not distort local angles, and objects are usually recognizable on all scales.

you can watch the original fractal zoom here

if you want you can download the original image of the map here
(65500pxl x 763pxl)

**due to the dimensions of the image, you may find it hard to view on your desktop, hence, this is the reason I made this video**

The music track used is called
"coming from chicago"

  • btw, my favorite part is 1:05 reminds me a bat

  • @iwantcoolname so awesome!!! its my understanding that these mercator maps work well with zooms that travel through or near as many minibrots as poss - with this in mind, if you want to do this again some time - may I suggest using the "blue oyster fractal twist" video I rendered - it goes through quite a few minibrots. if you are up for it let me know, I will render a linear version for you to work with....

  • Wonderful! I'm stunned.

  • @iwantcoolname Is there anyway you could do this with my "Double the Dose" vid or would that get too messy?

  • WILD! took me a sec to figure out what was going on.

nice twist. side scrolling is easier on the eyes than the tunnel vision you get with the zooms. don't get me wrong... the zooms are badass.

  • just an idea, you could have put some real objects in this video for scale reference. perhaps you can still do it with text labels without re-upload

  • Looks funkey!

  • They are SO much better with the sound turned off and some psychill....yeah ..

  • so if i download the image how can i use it if i can't see it

  • hey, for you're next vid considder using a new gradient
