VicDrift held their own version of the drift matsuri over the weekend, the R32 had it's fair share of problems, but survived thankfully.

Biggest issues were the overheating, causing very low power, but thankfully the engine survived some how. also the gearbox was very hard to change gears, finally giving away 2nd gear to the gear tooth fairy's

  • Hey dude i have watched most of your drift vids mad skills by the way. it seems the R32 is starting to lack a little power and grid the gears a little but it just keeps on drifting. Much mods done to this beast ?

  • @MrR31power

hey mate, its never put out much power, 180kw in its prime about 4 years ago. ive never wanted too much as i believe it takes incentive away for the driver to push a car around properly, instead relying on power to make up for mistakes and hard steering. it has been slowly losing power, at first i just kept driving, but now it's getting to the point where it's becoming a huge hindrance as you can see in the vid.

  • before this day i pulled my exhaust manifold off, the gasket was blown, the manifold was warped and a few of the studs had broke off. once i replaced this i was expecting it to regain power. Next praccy unfortunately i was having the same problem, went through the engine again, found a huge cut in one of the fmic hoses that was clearly leaking boost. I also put a oil cooler on hoping that would keep temps down, which i also believed to be one of the problems with the power.

  • Unfortunately when i got to winton, i was having the same problems again, except i found after the 2nd session, a heater hose was broken, and id been running without water for at least 1 session. After spending all day fixing that, we found the thermostat was broken too. Next day i got a few sessions before there was steam coming out of the engine, and id popped another water line at some stage.

  • When i got home i checked the radiator, it was 50% blocked, so along with the fucked thermostat basically i havent had a radiator for a long time. My guess is that the engine has been overheating, putting the ecu into safe mode, which has been cutting the power. Which tells me that it's pretty much been overheating constantly at each track day for probably over a year now. Compression and leakdown tests however show it's still all good.

  • As far as the gearbox goes, i have a sneaking suspicion a lot of the problem started with the clutch and not fully disengaging, but basically the synchros for 2nd died making it crunch, then about half way through this clip, i grind the gears down so far it cant stay engaged into 2nd, hence why you see it popping out of gears a few times, or me using 3rd gear where i should be using 2nd.
