Brazil has made history with the swearing-in of its first female president. On Saturday, Dilma Rousseff received the presidential sash from outgoing President Lula da Silva at a ceremony in the capital Brasília. In the 1960s, Rousseff was a guerrilla resisting Brazil's military dictatorship. She was imprisoned and tortured for three years. Democracy Now! interviewed Greg Grandin, professor of Latin American history at New York University, and author of "Empire's Workshop: Latin America, the United States, and the Rise of the New Imperialism." His most recent book, "Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City," was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History.

  • @BayAreaOrBust Hell? What do you call "hell"? Growing morethan USA and Europe togheter? Lending money to Europe and holding 250 billion dollars of US foregn debt? Strong middle class and lesspeople in poverty year after year? Becoming world 6th largest economy? Ah,,let me guess...crimes! I'm sorry. I must to admit Brazil is the only one place in the world where people comits crime. There's no crime in USA. Much less in Detroit, San Antonio, Atlanta.

Rio is not among world 40 most violent cities.

  • she fights poverty by literally fighting it, burning down homes and such ! good pick.
