These compact, innovative lithium-ion batteries are produced by AESC (Automotive Electric Supply Corporation), a Nissan-NEC joint venture founded in April 2007. Their performance compared with former-generation nickel metal hydride batteries is superior in every domain, including range, performance, reliability, safety and profitability. Lithium-ion batteries do not suffer from the socalled memory effect resulting from incomplete charge cycles which can ultimately lead to a fall-off in
capacity in the case of conventional batteries. AESC batteries are maintenance-free and are expected
to deliver between 80 and 100 per cent of their original capacity for an average duration of six years. It will also be possible to charge them for short cycles with no adverse effect on capacity. Air-cooling systems for batteries will be adapted to the type of vehicle and market.
