UMSU & The Canadian Federation of Students Manitoba are working together in solidarity with other students and coalition partners in Manitoba to host a Day of Action to Target Poverty on Thursday, November 5th. At the University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus students, professors, faculty and staff will be rallying outside of University Centre at 11:30am, and then heading on buses to the Legislative Buildings for a rally with other students and coalition partners.
Target Poverty The Campaign for a Poverty-Free Manitoba
Over 125,000 Manitobans live in poverty, and a portion of those are students. With increasing tuition, decreasing vacancy rates for apartments and rooms to rent, and less jobs for students, the Target Poverty campaign calls on the government of Manitoba to implement a plan for a Poverty-Free Manitoba that includes targets and timelines, and is adequately financed. UMSU wants to highlight education as major pillar in ending the circle of poverty, and the need for the government to take positive step to reducing upfront barriers such as tuition fees as well as adequately funding our post-secondary institutions.
