SODIS is an alternative water treatment method designed for use at the household level. the technology is simple in terms of the procedure yet effective in eliminating water borne related pathogens,it is very affordable and utilizes locally available material.
SODIS STEPS:
1. Prepare empty PET bottles- transparent plastic bottles from softdrinks and bottled water(1.5 to 2 liter). Wash PET bottles including the cap using soap with soft material like cloth. Rinse
2.Fully pour PET bottles with water
3.Place prepared SODIS bottles horizontally under direct sunlight for a minimum of six hours (termination of water borne related pathogens). you can place it anywhere, as long as there is enough sunlight.
4. Harvest the SODIS water, set aside to cool.drink

SODIS is promoted in the Philippines by HELVETAS,MIGROS, Palawan Advocates for Good Governance & Empowerment & SAGE

  • The leaching of DEHA and DEHP chemicals into the water is minimal and poses according to a recent study no harm for our health: As per WHO guidelines for drinking water quality it is well within the permissible limits and does not cause cancer or any other disease. For more information search for scientists Mr. J. Senthil Nathan and Dr. Ligy Philip.

  • it only works with small bottles up to max 3 liters, but yes it would be cool if they could use a higher capacity :)

  • Perhaps they could construct a huge plastic water container and just keep refilling it to have a steady supply of clean water without the cumbersome filling of individual bottles?

  • i heard reusing Bottles that may cause to Cancer,

So be aware and follow these methods.

  • @TheMaglev without water life generally comes to a terminal end after as few as 3 days

its a case of choosing the lesser (much lesser) of 2 evils

  • If you have enough clean water (and soap) to properly clean out, and rinse all of the bottles each time before you fill them and set them in the sun, then how do not already have enough water that is clean enough for drinking just as it is?

  • It has been proven that there are 0 chemicals that are mixed in the water because of the PET bottle. Plus, using glass bottles makes it even harder for the UVA rays to pass through the bottle.

  • They are using PET (PolyEThylane) bottles, and yes that might put harmful chemicals in the water after 6 hours under the sun's heat. An improvement to this - if you want to do it all perfect, would be to use glass bottles, placed on top of corrugated metal sheets. That would concentrate sunlight even more and thus increase the amount of UV radiation passing through the water. Of course, if these things are available.

  • what´s the name of the music that start at 5.00 min? it's so amazing!!

  • You're right of course, but in many places the chance of that happing is nothing compared to dying of cholera or dysentery.
