@90lysander So true! R.R. especially looks like a dork, though he's still convincing as a successful ladies' man/predator. As for Edda, she does look fabulous, and I really DK what she meant re that comment--anyone can see that she is tall and regal, with a lovely, noble, soulful face highlighted by striking hazel eyes and a proud, passionate mouth. She remains one of the greatest, most fascinating interpreters of Mozart ever.

Translation: Now you know who tried to rob me of my honor/ Who was the traitor who killed my father/ I beg you to avenge me/ Your heart wants vengeance too! Think of the wound in his poor breast, of the blood-covered ground / Should your righteous fury ever wane!

Text: Or sai chi l'onore/Rapire a me volse/Chi fu il traditore/Che il padre mi tolse! Vendetta ti chiedo/La chiede il tuo cor!/Ramenta la piaga/Del misero seno,/ Rimira di sangue /Coperto il terreno, /Se l'ira in te langue/ D'un giusto furor.

@marywardify Lol indeed. She's not ugly at all! Quite the opposite, in fact. And she's the only one in this movie that really looks good in the period costuming - even Kiri te Kanawa and Ruggero Raimondi, both of them very attractive people, look a trifle ridiculous. Edda, on the other hand, was born to wear that wig! :P

Sorry, of course, I meant Moser singing Donna Anna, NOT Donna Elvira. *Embarrassed* - I should acknowledge that Edda's passionate portrayal of Donna A. also shows the character's grief, along with her fury. E.M. told an interviewer that she had thought of herself as "too ugly" for an actress, so she studied singing instead...Lol
Edda Moser is extremely underrated. She was one of the great Mozart stylists and singing actresses of the 20th century. Except perhaps for Carol Vaness, I've never seen any other soprano get into this aria quite as completely as this. (4:30!) She's almost scary here.
A pity we do not have similar video documentation of her Queen of the Night.

I also love Edda Moser and I'm a fan...her Donna Anna is incredible and I think of her as being a lot better than Carol Vaness, Edda was very passionate and could sing a usually light Mozart role (like the Queen of the Night) and make it into what looks like a very hard to sing diva role....her voice is hard to emulate too...she's one of a kind :)
