This is so special and so spectacular, it measured and match the magnificent John Wayne and was great apparel for him to wear in this film, thank you Elmer Bernstein, and thank you John Wayne, for you like Bernstein as Spielberg does John Williams. They go together, the American west.

Photo is Nice but Sons of Katie Elder was directed by the Great Henry Hatheway.

I have always loved this theme. The first comment about Bernstein's ability to work in such a short note scale is very true. But in doing so he allows for larger modulations near the end of passages. I always thought that this theme and the theme from "The Big Country" were the mom and pop or all western themes. The syncopated approach to the theme really sets the pace for a lot of western themes to come. Dennis

Couldn't agree more hourlynewscaster and many westerns are remembered today mainly for their great themes. The Big Country is a big movie that only comes to life when the great Burl Ives snarls through his scenes like a big old grizly bear. The music is the most memorable aspect of this film and as you say it's one of the best themes of them all.The theme from Red River is also one that stays in the memory. Even very good westerns needed a quality theme to complete the package. lol

So do I!...It always amazes me that Bernstein could create so many great themes, using, it seems to me, so few notes! His movie scores are incredible, so powerful and pounding, I reckon himself and ol' Ennio Morricone are "neck and neck" when it comes to western themes!lol
