  • Why do some riders drop the reins with one hand when going down banks? (2:00) Kinda seems like a good way to lose control

  • I think she's just reaching back to tap the horse in between the banks, she's probably okay with control since she still has contact in the other rein, is balanced etc..

xD I wouldn't do that with my horse though

  • Who's ridin? My horse doesn't do cross country but she does do Show Jumpin.

  • I'm not sure whose in the videos :/ I couldn't see their number, but some of the photographs are of Philip Dutton and Darren Chiacchia

  • where are they located? awseome water banks!

  • it's at Groton House Farm in Hamilton,MA

  • God thats a difficult water complex! some great riding in there though :O

  • @Jazzme2305 She may also be doing it for balance. You will see that some riders lean back and raise one arm back for balance. Just another suggestion.

  • i love this place :D

  • Its refered to as 'hailing a cab' ha ha. it helps keep the riders weight back, behind the horses center of gravity during drops.

  • First rider @ 0:17 loses her stirrup first step down into water. I want to see a show jumper or a dressage rider do that!

  • that water is INTENSE.

  • i know the horse @rider at :35

  • pretty event!

  • Cool video. I stayed at Groton House in the Summer of 2004. I know the horse an rider at 0:32

    Thanks for the video

  • No people use it for balance.

  • to keep their balance

  • OMG!!!THAT HORSE @3:19 looks like my riding teachers horse

  • the horse at 2:00 was LOVELY

  • who was riding the paint at :41?

  • that water ...fuuuck

  • It helps less experienced people to keep their blaance and not get on the horse's neck. And you give enough release that way.

  • Freaking amazing water complex!!

    That's sweet!

  • i find it a bit easier to slip my reins evenly(should the bank be big enough for that) if i have them in one hand. that's just me though...

  • I let go with one hand down banks so my horse can have his head so I hold the buckle with one hand and don't get pulled forward also find it helps be far enough back if they peck on landing. And on most well schooled horses you don't really need reins for control, at least on none of the ones I ride/own. I guess you might if the horse is not seat/weight sensitive, i've lost my reins in combinations and managed to 'ride'(little bit of praying) my way out and sort myself out later.

  • Some great still shots there. I love how the first rider kept it together perfectly after losing here stirrup during the water jump.

  • I did a clinic with Philip Dutton, he rode my horse! but yeah I love this vid.

  • I heart Philip Dutton. My idol.
