It was a feature story in TIME magazine on August 11, 1975. That month, KNTV became the first TV station in the country to broadcast a commercial for over-the-counter contraceptives. The backlash was immediate, and channel 11 pulled the schedule.
This is one of the two spots that ran in rotation; this particular one was shown during News 11 to get viewers' feedback. The response was 8:1 in FAVOR of the commercials and the schedule was reinstated.
As general sales manager Jack Yearwood was quoted in TIME, "It's a hell of a claim to fame accepting the first rubber commercial."
'Nuff said.
