Eric Johnson was a relatively unknown guitarist until Guitar Hero came along but he's been around and done many good things. This particular song he is playing is one of my favourites not because of its technical playing like in his more famous song, Cliffs of Dover, but because of its style and the way it flows so well.

He only played a few songs at the G3 Live concert in 2006 but they were all good and it is this concert that I first heard this song, SRV, played.

  • Yes, it's true... Even Steve Vai is not mainstream. Walk up to 100 people on the street and ask them who these people are.. the best you could hope for is some sort of vague response. Joe Satriani is fairly well known in the "mainstream" but still you will get a lot of people scratching their heads if you ask them.

Outside of the whole "guitarist" and musicians circles, not many people knew who Eric was until GuitarHero.

There are almost 5 billion people on this planet.

  • unknown my ASS! he's one of the worlds greatest guitarists! mainstream these days no, but in the 80's he was pretty big, and still is. and @light487, Steve Vai was mainstream in the 80's as well, due to the fact that he played with Whitesnake, and David Lee Roth. So.. he's mainstream in his own right too. i will agree that Eric got a lot more of a showing with guitar hero, but he was still a pretty well known guitarist even before then

  • Eric Johnson has been a total badass since the early 80's, maybe even longer. I remember getting a flexidisc in a Guitar Player magazine back in the day that just blew my mind.

  • Closer to 7 Billion , yes. And to the uninformed masses , true , Eric is virtually unknown. I for one , am glad I'm not one of the uninformed. You could ask those same 100 people who Steve Morse or Steve Lukather are as well , and even though they played for two very well know bands , anonimity surrounds them. The same holds true for very many seriously amazingly talented musicians stuck in bands that they don't get to showcase their talents in , be it rock , country or otherwise. I just enjoy.

  • There are closer to 7 billion people on our planet today... Just saying.

  • this is actually not a good recording i saw the same exact video just the audio was better

  • Great composition, although I wish this piece was more based on SRV's style, being call and response, with a few of SRV's trademark licks. A wah pedal wouldn't have hurt to use either. Nonetheless, a great guitarist for many generations to come.

  • @EugenVittorelli You´re right won a grammy ,played the national anthem ,he was big back then ,bigger than now

but I like his new album !

Mr Johnson was great and will be great ,very underrated by most of the young musicians
