Apparently, one is supposed to write one's anticipated quarter mile time in on one's window with shoe polish when racing at the dragstrip. A friend of mine wanted a super bright LED display that would do the same thing... so here it is. The smaller panel sits by the driver and is connected my a MIDI cable to the larger display which is mounted in the window, I think. I really have no idea.

I used 2 Ubicom SX28s running at 1Mhz connected via an asynchronous serial connection. The knobs are BCD switches; the seven segment displays on the smaller board are driven directly by the SX28, whereas the large display required the use of 4 4511 LED drivers and an improvised 7 segment display made of many discrete LEDs.

The project originally ran @ 50Mhz, but this caused packet framing errors on long cable runs. Reducing the clock to 1Mhz fixed it; also, SX28 was unable to drive the larger 7 segment displays by itself, and the problem manifested not in display error but in missed packets. The 4511s solved that issue.
