i love his honesty about how he initially thought rufus was just being very gay lol to me the song is just a symbol of unrequited or socially taboo love for another human being. that's why i find it to be one of my favourite rufus songs and being so profound, one of my favourite songs in general, ever.
@basher1956 No it's not, it's based on a young lady who had a crush on her art teacher and ended up marrying a rich man. Where on earth did you hear that? He even says this in a live performance.
It is based on a lady; hence I was just a GIRL then. I believe Rufus Wainwright wrote this song because he wanted to take a break from writing personal songs for a change.
Um, no. It's about a gay man first realising he fancies other men, in this case the art teacher.
And then he never finds that (unrequited?) love again but instead ends up living with some rich guy who happens to own the sort of art that the art teacher also loved.
So you end up (we all end up?) with what is like your first love, but actually second best. Because the feeling can never be the same again.
this was a funny discussion. It's a bit like me saying "from what I can gather, the poem 'hickory-dickory dock' appears to be about a mouse or something that seems have clambered up the side of a grandfather clock. By jove, it's almost like the clock strikes 'one' or something, perhaps; which causes the mouse or whatever to scurry back down the side of the clock. Profound."
"The Art Teacher" is a magnificent art song posing as a pop ballad. So much could be said about its lyrics and musical setting. But, man, am I sorry I listened to THIS dweeb rattle on! That's two minutes of my life I can never get back!
My opinion is: although the little girl has grown up she still loves the art teacher in a platonic level, the same way as a child does. She's got a life, she's got a husband but the little child who is in love with the art teacher hasn't change..
I just want to add the what I personally have know is that some gay men but not all..they sometimes refer to themselves as a 'woman',it's a slang, fun thing?

Interesting to hear what a person assumes the song in question my be about.
I like the lyrics alot.
The words used in the song are different and don't take the usual route.
I believe them to be about many different people who've visited The Metro.
Or is it about a gay man's very personal view of his feelings that he's experienced?
Interesting.
