  • I'm serious... this stuff should be illegal, because it's endangering people's lives.

  • My god.. NOBODY is EVER going to try and attack the top of your head with a knife, in a straight arm posture, and then politely freeze so you can do your fancy bull shit moves.

Garbage like this that gets classed as "self defense" is going to get you KILLED if you even attempt it. It's utter crap.

  • Nobody attacks you like that with a knife.

This is the reality of defending against a knife attack, WATCH:

  • @SakuKoivuRocks May I remind you that Shotokan is a school of karate all on its own? To say that there are different schools of Shotokan karate is absolute nonsense - you either practice Shoto or you're practicing something else. Besides, this has nothing to do with the incompetence, objectively defined and independent of anyone's opinion, displayed in this video. The bottom line is - there is absolutely no control of the knife hand in any of these and this makes all the techniques useless.

  • this is weak!!! im embarrassed for them

  • @ytmpav i also Practice Shotokan Karate and Didier Lupo's applications are just that Didier Lupo's. They are not representative of shotokan Karate self defence applications. although they are representative of a type of interpretation of kata bunkai which I think is impractical...

  • @dbearTO

It is understandable that you do not agree with some of these techniques, and that's fine, its your opinion. However, there is not just one school of Shotokan, there are several, and their techniques can vary between schools. I have practiced similar techniques to the ones seen in the video and i can tell you that they do work.

  • I do practice Shotokan Karate too. Please have a look on that video:

KARATE bassaï-daï kata bunkai défense par Didier Lupo

This will show how self defense is done with Shotokan Karate.

  • @dbearTO nope

  • There is absolute disregard for the knife in all of these defenses. Your first priority should be to disable the weapon and there is none of that here. In fact, in a few of techniques shown you would actually be cut by the knife in executing your block - poor theory and lack-luster application.

  • nice video

  • weak

  • @mirageF1AZ Actually all the ones who keep crying has never been in a real fight. I don't know much about Shotokan but I am sure if you drill techniques than they will come in handy.

  • @louu951 listen up mate, nobody with comon sense uses a knife like that... But then again comon sense aint that comon!

  • And in karate before self defense moves are taught, the concept of avoiding the situation is taught first

  • Obviously they wouldn't work 100% of the time, nobody said it would, but I'm sure someone who's fluent in the art of Shotokan or any other style would have more of a chance defending against a knife attack compared to a normal person. There's a reason why it's called karate, it's open handed combat.

  • My money is on the guy with the knife. Knives aren't called 'weapons' for no reason. 5 minutes knife practice by an aggressive attacker will undo 5 years of martial arts practice by an 'expert'. Knives are the ultimate concealed weapon and can slash & cut quickly in different directions faster than any human can react. If you take on a knife attacker you'd better be prepared to get cut.

  • @downtownskater00 That's true.....With these techniques from above.....not even a cat would be afraid....;)))

  • All martial arts have something to offer. If you want to work knife defence one humble word of advice is put white shirts/pants on and use a no lie blade or a washable marker and let the other guy come at you using anything. At the end see how many times you got marked and adjust your training accordingly.

  • Nice One Thank You...

  • Those knife defenses will never work. If the attacker really wanted to hurt you he will keep stabbing until he hits you. Plus unless you are in a Bruce lee movie you will never be able to catch somebody's hand as they stab at you using full force.

  • I've studied Shotokan and didn't learn any of those moves for a knife defense. I'm sorry but I don't agree with the techniques. I would like to say thanks for taking the time to make the video. I enjoyed it.
