In this 8th lesson in the Folk Fingerstyle Modules we look at combining melody with the fingerstyle patterns covered so far and play the Australian classic Waltzing Matilda in open position. This is an intermediate level lesson. There is a more complex version with much more embellishment on the DVD (one of the bonus lessons!). TAB is on the web site!

Whole series will be on the web site and a DVD is available with some bonus material! See the web site for more details!

Taught by Justin Sandercoe.

Full support at the justinguitar web site where you will find hundreds of lessons on a wide range of subjects, and all the scales and chords that you will ever need! There is a great forum too to get help, no matter what the problem.

And it is all totally free, no bull. No sample lessons, no memberships, no free ebook. Just tons of great lessons :)

To get help with this lesson (and for further info and tabs), find the Lesson ID in the video title (like ST-667 or whatever) and then look it up on the Lesson Index page of justinguitar.com

Have fun :)

  • Hey Justin,

Have you ever thought of doing something like a small "box" in the corner of the screen to show where your left hand is when you zoom in on the finger picking part?

  • @skrpirate I've always thought those things are a distraction. Humans can only concentrate on one thing at a time, so imho it's better to be fully focused on one element of a technique. I have facility to have the little window in window but I choose not to.

  • hey justin i was wondering your a partner right so is this what you doing for a living or just on the side

  • @xxxnickrhxxx I do all sorts, make these vids, we sell books and DVD's, donations for web site, I do a lot of sessions as guitarist and a songwriter/producer and have toured the world several times over as a sideman to a few well recognised artists. About to start work on a guitar based album of my own!

  • I wish Justin would finger style me like that

  • Fitting that an australian tune be played on an australian guitar

  • how do you play the chorus? :P

  • @erikhayabusa Hey erikhyabusa, sorry for the late reply. I think Waits took the song structure and wrote his own lyrics to the music. I suppose it depends on you definition of cover. ... and yes, I am to lazy to look it up right now. ; )

  • Hey Justin, is that a blues junior in the background?

  • @jkfrojen tom trauberts bleus is a cover of waltzing mathilda i thougth?

  • Reminds me of Tom Traubert's Blues. Any chance for a Tom Waits song soon?

  • Thank you!

    Greetings from Berlin,

    Jan

  • this's the classical guitar playin' , is folk playing like the classical one ??/

  • i find that with finger picking songs, by seperating the left and right hand i get confused when my left hand should be hitting what notes. i think the box would be a great addition to your videos. thanks for the lesson, great choice of tunes!
