Removal of part of the thyroid gland has traditionally involved an incision in the neck, which is usually visible no matter small the incision or how skilled the surgeon. There is another newer approach however, using the da Vinci surgical robot.
This da Vinci robotic thyroid surgery is approached through the axilla, or armpit, and avoids any incision in the neck. This results in a better cosmetic result, as shown in this video. The video is a news story aired in early 2010, and documents the experience of a patient who underwent this surgery for a benign tumor in her thyroid by Drs. Tod Huntley and Ed Kwoiak of the Center for Ear Nose Throat & Allergy, or CENTA. Her results are typical of those of other patients of theirs. CENTA's YouTube channel (0centa) also has videos documenting the surgery step by step, as well as a patient's personal testimonial of her robotic thyroidectomy.
Drs. Huntley and Krowiak were the first surgeons in Indiana and among the first in the United States to adopt da Vinci robotic techniques in head and neck surgery, and they now instruct other surgeons in robotic surgery for thyroid and throat tumors. They are available for consultation for patients throughout the US and abroad.
CENTA is a private practice ear, nose, throat, and allergy practice which offers comprehensive treatment of adult and pediatric otolaryngology and head and neck surgical problems. In addition, each of the group's members subspecializes in specific areas of ENT, as seen on CENTA's website: www.centadocs.com. The group can also be reached by telephone at 1-800-283-1056.
Great effort. Explains it well. Looks like a cool new way to to the procedure. I wouldn't want an incision on my neck. Just hope the robot has enough quarters in it. Would gate for it to run out of juice part was through.
