Zero's Sabre - Mega Man X6 (1)

The first of four parts.

This is a boss rush of MMX6 using Zero. As the title implies, he is restricted to the sabre and nothing else. The restrictions of the challenge are as follows: no damage, no weapons (save for High Max who requires one to be damaged), no items, no parts. In this particular rush, the bosses are fought on Xtreme difficulty and, with one exception (High Max cannot be fought at Level 4 due to a design oversight), at Level 4. This entails exceedingly different behaviors from Level 1. Most significantly, bosses tend to use maneuvers unlocked by Xtreme mode with wanton disregard. Suddenly joke mavericks like Blizzard Wolfang become challenging, while others remain a joke in any form.

The first thing to know about Zero is he can utterly rape anything in this game. The second thing to know is it doesn't stop these battles from kicking my ass. It is also worth noting that in X6, Zero can perform his double jump and aerial dash from the offset. I make it a point not to use these in any battle, with one necessary exception. For the Nightmare Mother, it's a toss-up between using his double jump or equipping Hyper Dash/Jumper to make dodging their movement possible. Since the use of the double jump is technically in standing with the 'bare minimum', so to speak, and is harder to get by on than the parts, I use it. That battle is such a painful experience with Zero I don't think people are going to complain.

Individual boss comments:

Blizzard Wolfang: This puppy sure got mean between this video and my X run. Everything stays peachy and laughable for the first half. Then you get him past half health and realize that the very rare desperation move he has hidden is now dished out to a ridiculous degree. Notwithstanding that you can destroy the icicles, it doesn't stop him from zooming around the room like a madman and putting out more than you cut down. When he decides to be a real jerk and dance around on the floor, you'd better have a free wall to cling to or a firm belief in the occult. Something you'll see here and in many battles to come: Zero's Sabre is the ultimate nullifier.

Metal Shark Player: I stand by most of what I said last time. This battle is fun, plain and simple. Functionally difficult in some sense of the word, but still perfectly aced once you have a hint of how to play with him. The two changes brought about by Level 4 are that his low dive now homes in very, very precisely underneath you, and Blast Hornet is on crack. That's a moot point when anything the sabre touches falls apart like butter.

Blaze Heatnix: This battle is practically identical with Zero as it is with X. The differences are an uncomfortable proximity to Phoenix on the bottom of the screen (not really an issue) and hilarious stun hijinks. It also remains hard as hell. Everything relating to the top half of the screen is peaceful enough, but when he pulls physics-infuriating lava to hang from the ceiling, the trouble starts. Either you practice the art of pixel perfect frame jumping, or you jump over him/his energy slashes out in the open. This would be fine if there weren't lava droplets dripleting on your fucking head. Did I mention their rate was doubled on Level 4? Yay. His charging attack is also a mite faster and more randomly aimed between low and high. Not cool.

Shield Sheldon: Well, I can't rightly tell you what's new about him on Level 4. He's pinker?

High Max: Okay, I'll admit it. I really, really cheaped out the big black cow on my X fights. This time I let him play a little. It doesn't stop the battle from being of only moderate challenge, but I do let him run with his last attack longer so people can better visualize what a HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS IT IS.

How can I play using Zero?

There are secondary areas in the eight investigator stages. Make it to the end of one and defeat Nightmare Zero to unlock Zero as a playable character. It's easiest in the Weapon Center because the portal appears on the regular path.
