Esatto.

In Both the globe and the text have been made in 3D Studio Max.
I rendered the scene three times, One time with the globe only, and the text in black opaque, one time with the globe in Black and white (White the soil and black the sea), text always opaque, and the last time with the world in black opaque and the text in white.
Then I mixed everything up in After Effects using the Black-and-white-world rendering as a mask for the shine effect.
I hope this could answer all your doubts.

How did you design the text?

I created a Text Spline, then I extruded it, I converted the extruded object into a polygon.
Selecting the front faces of the text, I applied the Inset modifier, then a Face Extrude on the center of the letters. I animated the Amount parameter of the FaceExtrude modifier. Finally I applied a Bend modifier to the entire polygon and the work is done. You may need to put a SelectPoly modifier between the FaceExtrude and the Bend modifier, to make the second one work on the entire polygon.
