Rod Ingersoll details how he set up an experimental Aquaponics system using his existing fish pond with Koi Carp. Its a basic guide showing you how to build your own Aquaponic system.

Aquaponics is a sustainable, closed-loop farming system where fish waste is used to grow agriculture. Water and nutrients from the fish waste travels into a biological filter, solids are then removed and nutrient rich water flows around the backyard using gravity into two vegetable grow beds. These vegetable beds contain a bell siphon that drains all the water from them every 10mins and flows into two tanks under them. The water movement oxygenates the fish below.

Once i get some silver perch fingerlings they will go in the two black tubs below the grow beds. The I will be able to harvest vegetables and fish and still look at my beautiful Koi Pond.

This experiment was set up prior to travelling to Papua New Guinea where Rod will work with the local people to develop a self sufficient system.

  • Thank you so much for sharing, At the moment I am looking into this sort of system to help feed a small community

  • @Hunkybrowndude not a worry, pleased you liked it

  • If im thinking correctly adding fish to the tanks under the beds could cause harm to the fish in the pond because the water reaching them would never be clean. You could split off the outtakes of the plant beds so that some of the fresh water is reaching the final tank aswell as the semi dirty from the tanks and that should be fine =). The setup is awsome i will be taking a few ideas from that for myself =)

  • @TeslaSaw thanks. Actually the water is filtered by the grow bed above. No need to split any water pipes. Good luck with your system. Pleased i was able to assist you.

  • i love how not only is it functional, it looks nice

the touch with the waterfalls and lion and 3 tiers, really NICE

    beautiful setup

  • @dramey03 has to look good in my opionion.
