0ff Centre (1969) represents one of the few occasions when British arranger/ composer John Cameron's skills as a jazz pianist have been captured in o recording studio. Today he is better known far his film scores including Kes, Psychomania and A Touch of Class, and his classic arrangements for a variety of artists such as Donovan (Sunshine Superman), Cilla Black (If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind), Hot Chocolate (Everyone's a Winner), Maynard Ferguson and Salena Jones. Arriving in London in the mid'60s having gained o music degree from Cambridge University, John's subsequent success as a commercial arranger steered him away to some extent from his first calling as o jazz musician. Like many arrangers of his era, however, a jazz sensibility resides at the care of his identity and colours every aspect of his music making. The sheer ingenuity of the music he composed for 0ff Centre, not to mention his fine jazz piano technique, remind the listener vividly of this fact and illustrates just how far-reaching John's musical outlook is.
