Today's lick is inspired from the style of John McLaughlin. Although he is considered by many as a highly technical guitarist, you can achieve his sound and style by dissecting some of his licks and adding them to our own style. This lick starts off in F# minor pentatonic on the 2nd and 1st strings. Then it moves up 2 frets to G# and repeats the riff back and forth between the two keys. In this example, the hammer on technique is used to create a smooth and flowing lick phrase. Watch out for the shape change near the end of the lick.
