@ps052 good try very close but no the way it worked is that Halsey at first piked 300 seemingly random kids that had very strong personality traits like stubbornness or strong Morales and chief was the 117 of that group, their is 3 stages project Orion which was just spec ops( marines odst ect. ) then spartan 2 and then spartan 3, but still pretty close

His armor is filled with a material that hardens when hit hard enough. It softens when deactivated, that's why the marine pressed the button at the back of his head. And the armor explodes when told to to keep the armor design a secret from the aliens.

No, actually he is from a new race. Before the Covenant, there was a doctor (Dr. Halsey) who discovered that some kids had 1 gene more that the human. She started some experiments in the project called Orion I. But all the kids died. Then she started a new investigation: the Spartan II Project. Part of the experiments consist that the bones where covered by a steel alloy to make them stroger (thats why in Halo 3 the Chief survived the fall, and he had luck, as Cortana says in the intro).
