Roger Whittaker was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1936. Whittaker's parents, were originally from Staffordshire, England, where they owned and operated a grocery shop. His father had to move his family to Afrika for health reasons. That Roger Whittaker would eventually become a musician was no surprise, since his grandfather sang in various clubs, and his father played the violin. Roger learned to play the guitar. He went back to Britain in 1959 and released his first professional recording in 1962. In 1969 his own composition "Durham Town (The Leavin')," became Whittaker's first Top 20 hit in Britain. In 1971, Whittaker recorded "The Last Farewell," which would become his biggest hit and a signature song, selling over 11 million copies worldwide.
He has developed his own successful career in Germany, singing in their language. Roger Whittaker has also recorded in French and Spanish.
For unknown reasons, the original hit recordings of "The Last Farewell" and "Durham Town" are not available on CD anywhere. All current CD releases contain only re-records.
He is best known for his baritone singing voice and his trademark is his whistling ability.
"Indian Lady", written by Whittaker himself was recorded in 1976 and included in the album "Reflections of Love".

Thank you, pbamse, for sharing a very nice video. I came to know Whittaker on TV HITPARADE during my stay in West Germany in '70s and an ardent fan since then. Thank you again ☆☆☆☆☆

  • good song!! can anyone please get me the mp3 song but not of the live version???

  • My mom had one of his albums and this song was on it, it was my favorite. Brings back good memories.

  • @GANNAMEDE sory about being petty. lol. I agreed with your comment though. You should repost it under the last farewell!

  • @WildAlaskanBlossom Actually my comment was meant for his "Last Farewell" song, don't know how it wound up under this one!!!

  • @GANNAMEDE Hi I'm 20 but I know that the reason he (roger) had to break up with his girlfriend/love is because she was indian and he was white. Her parents would not allow them to court each other anymore. This is so heartbreaking.

  • @WildAlaskanBlossom Check out Roger's Das Lied von Aragon (Song of Aragon). It's in German but I'm sure you'll like it...

  • @siasti haha. We are all (or at least I am) children at heart.
